Admission to graduate study at Case Western Reserve University is determined by the individual programs and departments, and is approved by the Dean of Graduate Studies.

Applicants should contact the specific department or program to obtain information and application materials. All material submitted becomes the property of the School of Graduate Studies and will not be returned. Requests should be addressed to the specific department or program.

Deadlines

Because deadlines for receipt of completed applications vary among departments and programs, please be certain to note the deadline(s) specified by the department to which you apply.

The following deadlines are given only as a general guideline:
March 1 for fall semester enrollment and November 1 for spring semester enrollment if you are applying for both admission and financial aid consideration. Otherwise, you must apply 30 days prior to the proposed date of enrollment (90 days when applying from outside the U.S.). Please check with the department to which you are applying for definite deadlines.

Open Application Procedure

Full instructions are included within the online application. Your application is comprised of the application and any other materials requested by the department or program.

In addition to the materials required for each individual program, you must submit the following:

Statement of Objectives
You should create your own document and include “Statement of Objectives” as the heading. The statement should be one or two pages and should include your purpose in undertaking graduate work, and an explanation of your study and research interests as they relate to your undergraduate/graduate study and professional goals.
Academic Transcripts
You are required to identify all post-secondary educational institutions you have attended on your application form, and to submit an official transcript from each. Admission to the Graduate School is conditional on final certification of degrees awarded.

Note to International Students: Documents in languages other than English must be accompanied by certified translations in English.

Letters of Recommendation
Three letters of recommendation must be submitted from those individuals sufficiently familiar with you, and who can assess your academic preparation, abilities and accomplishments. Letters should be from your most recent instructors in your proposed field of study. If you have been out of school for several years, one letter may be from your employer, supervisor or other person familiar with your most recent activities.
Application Fee
A non refundable application fee of $50 is required for each application submitted.
Test Scores
The institutional code for Case Western Reserve University is 1105. The Graduate School will forward all official score reports of standardized tests (GRE, TOEFL, etc. ) to the program of interest. The department will inform you which standardized tests are required for your program.
International students whose first language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and earn a minimum score of 550 if paper-based, or 79 if Internet-based. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is also accepted. The minimum acceptable score is 6.5. Some departments may require higher scores. International applicants cannot be admitted to full standing without receipt of an acceptable official TOEFL score.
Other Documentation
Some programs may require additional supporting information such as a list of publications, auditions, writing samples, or interviews.
International students must submit an affidavit of support indicating sufficient funds to cover the expenses for tuition and living expenses for one academic year. Bank statements and other supporting financial documents are sufficient. Sending the Application

All application materials are to be assembled and sent to the appropriate department or program. Do not send to the Office of Graduate Studies. Do not submit application materials individually. Wait until you have all required materials (except those that are being sent directly) before sending.

To check on the status of your application, contact the program to which you have applied. If you are admitted to a program, you are admitted only for the term specified in the letter of admission. If you are unable to enroll in the semester for which you were initially admitted, you may request to defer matriculation up to two academic semesters. In such cases, the department to which you have applied may accept or reject your request, and the terms of readmission may differ from the original offer. If a delay of more than two semesters is requested, your file must be reviewed and reevaluated by the department. If more than two years elapse since acceptance, you must reapply in the same manner as a new applicant. Because non-enrolled applicant files are only kept for a maximum of two years, all documentation will have to be resubmitted.

Financial Aid

CWRU has various forms of financial aid available to graduate students. Students interested in being considered for assistantships through their programs must indicate their interest by checking the appropriate box on the application. U.S. citizens can also apply for Federal financial aid and receive student loans.
